School Houses

Pupils at Kirkby Thore Primary School are assigned into three houses inspired by the pikes we see from our playground and classrooms: Murton, Dufton and Knock.  These Pennine landmarks hold local significance, are close by for visits and embody our overarching school value of ‘Aim High’.

Siblings at KTPS will find themselves split between different houses. This is because we aim for our house groups to become like a new family for pupils. Pupils sit at house tables for lunch, and we hope this will inspire new friendships and allow older pupils to provide a nurturing role for our youngest children.

School houses play an important role in our behaviour management and rewards system.  Pupils who demonstrate effort, manners, success and age-appropriate school values are awarded house points.  House Captains from Y6 count these each week and we celebrate the house with the highest weekly total by allowing them first lunch service, a golden tablecloth and seats (rather than benches) in assemblies for the next week.  A cumulative total is calculated for a half termly prize which has been pre agreed by school council – in this way pupils have a goal to strive for.
