Physical Education

At Kirkby Thore Primary School Our Physical Education (PE) curriculum is designed to ignite a lifelong love of physical activity by fostering enjoyment, developing skills and confidence. We believe this is an important part of promoting a healthy physical and mental lifestyle. We believe in creating an inclusive and dynamic environment where every student is encouraged to engage, explore, and challenge themselves both physically and mentally. Younger pupils are given the opportunity to represent school competitively and older pupils are encouraged to coach their peers.

Key Aims:

  • Enjoyment: Central to our curriculum is the belief that physical activity should be enjoyable. By offering a variety of sports, games, and outdoor activities, we ensure that every student finds something they love. This positive experience forms the foundation for lifelong participation in physical activity which we openly promote as a benefit to mental health as well. We work in partnerships with local experts to develop e.g. football, rugby, tennis and dance and are part of the Eden Valley Association of cluster schools ensuring our pupils compete, develop skills and socialise regularly through sport.
  • Skill Development: We focus on building fundamental movement skills alongside sport-specific techniques. Through progressive, well-structured activities, students develop agility, coordination, balance, and strength, ensuring they are equipped for a range of physical challenges both inside and outside school.
  • Outdoor Learning: Our awe-inspiring school grounds demand that outdoor education is a core component of our curriculum. We ensure our students connect with nature across the curriculum. Outdoor learning fosters teamwork, resilience, problem-solving, and creativity, enhancing both personal and physical development. We engage with specialist leaders to develop outdoor and adventurous skills and take pupils off site as often as possible from them joining us in EYFS.
