Literacy is at the heart of our curriculum, and we aim for our pupils to develop a lifelong love of language and literature during their time with us. We have carefully selected quality texts for specific age groups in school, linked to our topics, to help bring these to life and develop key comprehension skills and inspire pupils’ creative writing. Alongside this we follow a well-sequenced programme of teaching reading – from the early stages of phonic progression (we have chosen Read Write Inc as our scheme for the delivery of synthetic phonics) through to the development of inference skills which enable children to seek out information for themselves, explore subjects in depth and gain a deeper understanding of the world around them. The development of writing and oracy skills give our children the power to both express themselves confidently and evidence and debate their growing knowledge and understanding of the curriculum they are learning. From Y3 we use The Write Stuff to inspire children by using its quality texts, so that they have a clear view of what high quality writing looks like, to enable them to structure their writing effectively and then improve it through the acquisition of self-editing skills.
